Santorini is the shape of a volcano seen from the inside. What looks like a crescent island is really the rim of a vast caldera, flooded by the sea after an ancient eruption, and that geology defines everything about a visit. Along the cliff edge, the towns of Oia and Fira spill down in tiers of whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and cave dwellings carved into the rock, all facing west over the water. It is from these terraces that Santorini's celebrated sunsets draw crowds each evening, as the light turns the caldera gold and then rose. Down at sea level, the volcanic past shows in beaches of red and black sand, in the vineyards that produce crisp Assyrtiko wine from vines coiled low against the wind, and in the excavated Bronze Age town of Akrotiri. The island is compact but dramatic, better suited to slow days, long dinners and views than to endless activity — which is part of why it draws so many couples and honeymooners. Rooms with caldera views are the island's signature, and often its priciest asset.

When is the best time to visit Santorini?
The shoulder months — roughly late April to June and September into October — are widely considered ideal, with warm weather, swimmable seas and lighter crowds than midsummer. July and August are hot and very busy, especially around sunset in Oia, while spring and autumn make the caldera walks far more comfortable.
Why are Santorini's sunsets so famous?
Because the cliff-top towns face west across the open caldera, giving an uninterrupted view of the sun sinking into the sea. The tiered white buildings catch the changing light, and Oia in particular has become the classic viewpoint. Arriving early or watching from Imerovigli or Fira can give you the same spectacle with a little more space.
What are Santorini's beaches like?
Distinctive rather than classic golden sand. The island's volcanic origin gives it striking red and black beaches, such as those near Akrotiri, Kamari and Perissa, often backed by dark cliffs. The water is clear and good for swimming, though the dark sand gets hot underfoot — sandals and shade are worth having.
