Mykonos is the Cyclades at their most cosmopolitan: a compact, sun-bleached island where whitewashed cube houses and bright bougainvillea form a maze that has drawn travellers for decades. Its main town, Chora, is a photogenic tangle of narrow, deliberately confusing lanes designed long ago to baffle raiders, now lined with boutiques, galleries and tavernas. Above the waterfront stand the island's famous row of windmills, and just below them sits Little Venice, a cluster of old sea-captains' houses whose balconies hang directly over the water — a classic spot to watch the sun go down. Beyond Chora, Mykonos is known for its beaches and the beach clubs that gave it a reputation as one of Greece's liveliest party islands, particularly along the south coast. Yet the island has quieter corners too, from calmer family beaches to the small chapels and dry-stone landscapes of the interior, and boats leave regularly for the sacred archaeological island of Delos nearby. When is the best time to visit Mykonos?
June and September are popular for combining warm weather and swimmable seas with a slightly calmer feel than the July and August peak, when the island is busiest and liveliest.
