The quietest of the main Balearic Islands, Menorca trades the nightlife of its neighbours for something slower: white-sand coves, dry-stone walls, and a coastline you can still walk end to end. The whole island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, a status that has helped keep its development low-rise and its interior green. Two towns anchor it — Mahón (Maó), the capital wrapped around one of the Mediterranean's great natural harbours in the east, and handsome Ciutadella, the former capital, with its cathedral and shaded old streets in the west. Between them run two very different coasts: the wilder, wind-brushed north with reddish rock and open bays, and the softer south with pine-backed sands like the well-loved Cala Galdana. Threading the entire shoreline is the Camí de Cavalls, a historic bridle path now walked in stages by hikers chasing one hidden cove after another. Add the island's Talayotic stone monuments, its Mahón cheese and its lemony gin, and Menorca rewards the traveller who slows down.

When is the best time to visit Menorca?
Menorca has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. High summer brings the warmest sea and the busiest coves, while late spring and early autumn offer gentler heat, good walking weather on the Camí de Cavalls and fewer crowds. Autumn tends to bring the most rain. Check current forecasts, as many smaller businesses run a seasonal calendar.
Is Menorca good for families?
Very. It's smaller and calmer than Mallorca or Ibiza, with shallow, sheltered coves, short driving distances and a laid-back pace that suits younger children. Cala Galdana and other south-coast beaches are popular family bases. As always, read each listing for details on cots, parking and how far the nearest beach or shop really is.
What is the Camí de Cavalls?
It's a historic path that runs around the whole coastline of Menorca, now a signposted walking route split into stages. Walkers use it to reach coves that cars can't get to and to string together beaches, cliffs and viewpoints on foot. You can tackle a single scenic section in a morning or link several stages over a longer trip — no need to walk the entire loop.
How do I get to Menorca and get around?
Menorca has its own airport near Mahón, with seasonal connections rising in summer, and ferries link the island to the Spanish mainland and neighbouring Balearics. Once there, a hire car is the easiest way to reach the more remote coves, though buses connect the main towns. Ask your host about parking and the closest transport links when you book.
What is Menorca known for besides its beaches?
Plenty. The island is dotted with Talayotic prehistoric monuments — taulas, talaiots and navetas built in stone thousands of years ago.
