Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island in the Philippines' Surigao del Norte province, long known as the surfing capital of the country and now one of Southeast Asia's most loved slow-travel escapes. Its reputation was built on Cloud 9, the hollow right-hand reef break that put the island on the world map, but Siargao is far more than a wave. Days here drift between coconut-palm back roads, glassy lagoons hidden in mangrove forests, tidal rock pools that fill with the ocean, and empty sandbank islands you reach by outrigger boat. General Luna is the buzzing heart, packed with cafes, surf shops and open-air bars, while the north around Pacifico stays quieter and more local. How do I get to Siargao?
Siargao is served by Sayak Airport (airport code IAO), located near Del Carmen in the north of the island. Airlines operate flights connecting it with major Philippine hubs such as Manila and Cebu. From the airport it is roughly a 45-minute to one-hour road transfer to General Luna, the main town, usually by shared or private van. Some travellers also reach Siargao by ferry from the mainland; check current schedules before you travel.
What is the best time to visit Siargao?
Broadly, the drier, sunnier months run through roughly March to October, which is popular for island hopping and general travel. If surfing is your priority, the swell tends to be biggest in the second half of the year, with the peak surf season around late August through November. October to around March can bring more rain and occasional storms. Conditions vary year to year, so check a recent forecast close to your dates.
How do I get around Siargao?
The most popular and flexible way to explore is by renting a motorbike or scooter, which lets you reach beaches, viewpoints and the coconut road at your own pace — only ride if you are confident and always wear a helmet. Motorized tricycles ('habal-habal' and standard tricycles) are widely available for shorter trips and are a good option if you would rather not drive. The classic Siargao island-hopping day trip visits three small islands by outrigger boat: Naked Island (a bare sandbank), Daku Island (the largest, and the usual lunch stop), and Guyam Island (a tiny palm-covered islet). Tours generally include the boat, and often a seafood lunch on Daku. It is one of the most popular things to do on the island and easy to arrange locally through your host or a tour operator.
What else is worth seeing besides the surf?
Beyond Cloud 9 and the island-hopping trio, highlights include Sugba Lagoon, an emerald lagoon reached by boat and great for swimming and kayaking; the Magpupungko rock pools, natural tidal pools best visited at low tide; and the coconut-tree road, a long stretch flanked by thousands of palms that is a favourite photo and scenic-drive spot. The quieter north around Pacifico is worth exploring for a more local feel.
