Maui, the Valley Isle, folds a whole holiday into one island: two ancient volcanoes joined by a green isthmus, sunny resort coasts on the leeward side, and rainforest, waterfalls, and black-sand coves along the windward east. A day here can begin above the clouds at the roughly 10,000-foot summit of Haleakalā and end snorkelling over the sunken crater of Molokini. The Road to Hāna threads dozens of narrow bridges past cascades and sea cliffs, while Wailea, Kīhei, and the Kāʻanapali coast line up beaches, winter whale-watching, and long sunset walks. West Maui also carries a heavier story: the historic town of Lahaina was devastated by the August 2023 wildfire, and the community continues to rebuild. Travellers are asked to visit with care, support local businesses, and follow current guidance on which areas have reopened. Inland, Upcountry towns such as Makawao and Kula bring cooler air, farm stands, and open ranch country.

When is the best time to visit Maui?
Maui is a year-round destination thanks to its mild climate. Winter (roughly December to April) brings humpback whales offshore and is the busiest, priciest stretch, while spring and autumn shoulder seasons often mean thinner crowds and better rental value. The leeward south and west coasts stay drier and sunnier; the windward east is greener and wetter.
Can I still visit Lahaina after the 2023 wildfire?
The August 2023 wildfire destroyed much of historic Lahaina and the community is still recovering, so parts of the town remain closed or restricted. The rest of Maui welcomes visitors, and travelling respectfully — supporting local businesses and following official guidance on what has reopened — is one of the best ways to help. Always check current local sources before you go.
Do I need a rental car on Maui?
For most visitors, yes. Public transport is limited, and Maui's highlights — the Road to Hāna, the Haleakalā summit, and beaches scattered across the coasts — are spread far apart.
