Barbados packs four very different holidays into one compact coral island. The sheltered west, the so-called Platinum Coast, trades in glassy turquoise water, calm swimming, and a slower pace prized by families and villa stays. Swing round to the south and everything speeds up: St Lawrence Gap strings together bars and restaurants within walking distance, while Oistins draws locals and visitors alike to its Friday night fish fry. Bridgetown, the capital, is the island's practical heart, closer to everyday life, transport, and lower prices than the resort strips. Then there is the rugged Atlantic east, where Bathsheba's boulders and surf break the postcard mould entirely. Beyond the sand, the island rewards curiosity, from underground limestone caverns at Harrison's Cave to rum heritage, plantation houses, and turtle-filled bays off Carlisle Bay. Getting around is straightforward by hire car or the local bus network.
