Albania has moved quickly from off-the-radar to one of the Mediterranean's most talked-about coastlines, yet it still feels less polished and more affordable than its neighbours. The star is the Albanian Riviera, a stretch of the Ionian coast where the road drops from the Llogara pass down to a string of villages and coves. Ksamil, near the southern border, is known for fine sand, clear water and tiny offshore islets; Sarande is the busier hub for restaurants, nightlife and boat trips; and Dhermi leans quieter and more stylish. Inland, the country's history takes over. Berat, the UNESCO-listed City of a Thousand Windows, stacks white Ottoman houses up a hillside beneath a lived-in castle. The capital, Tirana, surprises visitors with its colourful buildings, cafe culture and fast-changing energy. To the east, Lake Ohrid shares one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes with North Macedonia; on the Albanian side, Pogradec offers a relaxed lakeside promenade and local trout. Distances are manageable, whether you fly into Tirana or cross by ferry from Corfu. When is the best time to visit the Albanian Riviera?
Late spring and early summer are a sweet spot: the sea is warming up, prices are gentler than peak season, and the beaches are far less crowded than in high summer. July and August are hottest and busiest, especially around Ksamil and Sarande. September often keeps warm sea temperatures with thinner crowds.
How do I get to the Albanian Riviera?
Many visitors fly into Tirana and drive or take a bus south to Sarande, or fly to Corfu in Greece and cross by fast ferry to Sarande in well under an hour. From Sarande, Ksamil, Butrint and the Blue Eye spring are short trips. A car helps for exploring the coast road and reaching quieter beaches.
